Description

“I laughed and cried as I read A Dress for Anna.  As an adoptive mom myself, sometimes I shook my head in frustration as I read and recalled the complicated, costly process of ‘becoming family.’  Through the entire book I marveled as I watched the miraculous, powerful hand of God move circumstances, governments, and people to accomplish His great purposes.  You’ll love this book!  It will make you hunger for more God-adventures in your own life.”

Every little girl loves a pretty new dress, and my daughter Anna was no exception. Trembling with emotion, she ripped open the department store bag that contained her new dress, tights, shoes, and undergarments. Then she pulled out the lavender floral print dress, caressing the silk lining and rubbing her face in the soft fabric.

“Platya,” she whispered. Dress. The quiet was only momentary, though as the reality of the situation sank in. “Platya,” she then cheered. “Halya doma.” Halya is going home.

Although it was the first time in her life that she had ever owned any piece of clothing, it was not the dress that brought such emotion, but what it represented. The new dress meant that it was finally the day that Halya (whom we would name Anna) would leave the orphanage and travel home to live with her new family. It was a day she had awaited for over three years, and a day that I had worked for nearly as long.

A Dress for Anna: The Redemption of the Life of a Ukrainian Orphan tells the fascinating story of how God led Deborah and Rob Amend to adopt a handicapped preschooler from an orphanage in Ukraine, and intricately knit her into their family. Beginning with the circumstances that opened their hearts to adoption, continuing through the entire process, and culminating with the difficult adjustments for Anna as she experiences life in a new culture, this book honestly shares the struggles, grief, and joy the Amend family faced as they followed God down the rocky path of international adoption.

This powerful narrative not only provides readers with a clear understanding of the often challenging aspects of adoption, particularly for special needs children, it also offers inspiration by illustrating just how much an average, ordinary family can do when listening to God and following His call.

Deborah J. Amend is the mother of five children, three of who were adopted internationally. A cum laude graduate of the University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music, she is a former inner-city music teacher who retired to stay home and raise her children. She is a freelance writer and speaker, focusing on adoption, child advocacy, and a healthy biblical respect for people with disabilities.

International and/or Domestic Adoption, Ukraine, special needs (handicapped) children or the Christian walk of faith - if you are interested in any of these topics, you will benefit from reading this brief account of Anna's adoption; brief, but packed full of information on all these subjects including tips on getting involved in adoption, common adoption myths and organization names/addresses that support adoption. If for no other reason, read the book for the heartwarming story of a spirited little girl who started life in Ukraine (beautifully described)who traveled the road from severely deformed, newborn orphan to candidate for the Paralympics. Alright! I admit to being the mother of the author, but because of this, I can vouch for the authenticity of the book as my husband and I - as spectators and sometime baby-sitters - lived this experience with the Amend family and would do it again in a New York minute!

“This is a delightful read with lots of insight into the challenges of inter-country special-needs adoption.  Both the faith of the Amends and the strength shown by Anna are inspirational, and I would encourage everyone with a heart for God’s precious little ones and in particular, an interest in adoption of special-needs children to read A Dress For Anna.”

“I have been friends with Deb and Rob Amend for many years.  As such, I could hear their voices in the pages of this book.  I know the sound of Deb’s voice when she’s frustrated and the power of Rob’s dry wit, which is at its best in frustrating situations.  Deb, Rob, and Anna are real people.  In fact, all of the characters in this story are real including the character of God, who called a young couple without resources, to risk a great deal in order to save a life.

This story engaging largely because Anna is engaging and as precocious and easy to love as she appears in these pages.   She is an overcomer.  But the story is not just about Anna.  It is about culture shock, the pain of powerlessness, and the difficulties of an international adoption.  As such, another reason the story is engaging is the manner in which Deb recounts it – the way in which we share in her struggles, as she processes her thoughts and feelings with us.  I laughed as I read the frustrated and sometimes paranoid thoughts that barraged Deb’s mind.  Those who take up the challenge of an international adoption will find their patience tested, and the development of patience in a person’s life is not an attractive process to watch.  Deb has the gift of finding humor in it and, in so doing, has interpreted for all of us the survivability of the development of that precious gift-patience.  It is a gift that comes with scars.  I was touched as I saw in these pages the beautiful working of God’s grace in all of their lives.  It is easy to see how God was not just giving Anna a blessing, He was also [perhaps even more so] blessing Deb and Rob.

There are different kinds of saints.  The famous ones are burned at the stake.  The less famous wear hairnets and serve lunch in school cafeterias.  Each has a story with the power to inspire.  Each has a calling to touch a life with the tangible love of Christ.  Deb and Rob Amend have done just that, and their story is inspiring.”
