Description
ChristianWorship Aids / Lent

From the Author:
Some of my most favorite memories as a child involved the smell of  fresh baked bread or cookies. As I was searching for an idea for Lent one year I noticed that several of the major stories from the Bible involved bread. I began to wonder how to combine the smells I loved with the stories I loved. This was right about the time that Bread Machines were
all the rage. Someone suggested we set up a bread machine in the sanctuary, timed to finish just before the start of worship. Delicious smells filled the sanctuary as people came for worship. It became one of our more memorable Lenten series.

I brought the same series idea to my next church, which had a bigger sanctuary. It was big enough that we decided to set up three bread machines. People were overwhelmed with the smell of fresh baked bread at the start of worship. It worked so well that when the bread was given out at the children’s sermon we had “children” of all ages come
forward.

Think of this Lenten series as a loaf of bread you serve your congregation, each weekly slice made from a different recipe. This series will involve all of the senses while at the same time feeding the soul. Forget that low-carb Adkins diet. This series is high-carb all the way.

Bread for the Journey starts at Ash Wednesdayand continues through Holy Week and Easter. It includes sermons andchildren’s sermons, worship ideas, and an original theme song. It alsoincludes an idea for a Lenten project which can be handed out andcollected by the congregation as a reminder of the weekly themes. Easyrecipes for bread machines are included each week. You just need tofind someone to volunteer their bread machine and assemble theingredients.

For busy pastors searching for an idea for Lent this is a seriesthat will create powerful long-lasting memories in your congregation.Feed them the bread of life. Give them bread for their journey thisLent.

Sincerely,
Rolf Svanoe

Worship involves the senses. The light filtering in from thestained-glass windows, the colors of the vestments, and even the wordswe read in our Bibles and prayer books fascinate us visually inworship. The sounds of musical instruments and voices raised in songgrip us audibly. The feel of the wood on the pews and the altar or theleather on our Bibles can engage our sense of touch. All of thesesensations come together to form our worship experience.

In Bread for the Journey, Rolf Svanoe has sought to attract our othersenses, enhancing our encounter with God. This Lenten worship seriesoffers sermons for Ash Wednesday, each week in Lent, and services forHoly Week and Easter. This book also includes recipes for breads thatcan be baked and distributed during the services, each scent and tasteoffering an additional insight into the Lenten worship experience.Whether it is the sweetness of Welcome Bread or the bitterness ofBetrayer’s Bread, each bread takes us on a journey through the seasonof Lent, culminating in the death and resurrection of Jesus.

Pastors and other ministers will be able to use this resource to drawtheir congregations into a deeper and more fulfilling Lenten worship.Bread for the Journey is a resource that will feed a congregation, bothspiritually and physically.

Pastor Rolf Svanoe grew up in Wisconsin, a full-blooded Norwegian cheesehead! He has served three churches in Wisconsin, but now pastors a Lutheran church in South Dakota, where the Packers are a definite minority. When he is not rooting for Green Bay or working on his Doctor of Ministry degree, he is playing his trumpet. Once in a while, his church tolerates his liturgical innovations like Jazz worship or Polka worship. He doesn't understand why they won't allow him to serve bratwursts in the parking lot after worship. Rolf has earned degrees from Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as well as Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. He is currently enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry in Biblical Preaching program at Luther Seminary.

'Bread For the Journey' is a wonderful series which brought 'JOY' to the hearts of God's people during the 2008 Lenten season. Throughout the community five congregations gathered for an experience I'm sure they will never forget. The congregations- not the Pastors - moved each week to a different church. The evening began with a meal and fellowship prior to worship.

On Ash Wednesday each family was given a bread basket labeled with the theme: 'Bread for the Journey'. Each week that followed they were given a slice of wooden bread labeled with the evening's message to place in the bread basket. The book: 'Bread For The Journey', included a song which certainly set the tone for the night, as well as, a children's sermon which centered on the message. We also used the liturgy and benediction which was included.

The attendance of congregations that joined together in heart and song increased throughout the whole season and many mentioned they hated to see it end. I highly recommend this series and believe that you too will be blessed as you journey with Christ throughout Lent. We used the series for all services in Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

This book offers a fresh lenten expereince. Always mindful of the five senses when developing worship expereinces for my congregation, I was delighted to find that "Bread for the Journey" offers something for each of them. I did adapt the book to meet the needs of my congregation - using the sermons as an outline, I added my own expereinces as well as those of my congregation to fill in the meat - and to make the expereince ours. We also choose to cut bread slices for each week from card stock and we handed them out with a sample of bread in a small baggie each week. We ordered the tiny bread baskets and distributed them on Ash Wed. The card stock bread slices required the help of many and provided a grand time of fellowship. I did not know how this part would go over, but I have heard a lot about them, and I will confess that some of my members have cheated by getting slices for freinds who have missed a service so thier baskets will be full on Easter. The children's sermons are wonderful. If you are looking for a way to wake your congregation up to the expereince of Lent - this book will certainly help you do it!

I appreciate Pr. Svanoe's comprehensive Lenten series, and intend to use it in the interim ministry setting where I am currently serving. The material whets the appetite for preaching themes, music, and other special additions to what is given. We will attempt a Lenten devotional book on the Bread for the Journey theme, complete with bread recipes from members. It's a very appropriate theme for a congregation in call process and transition.
